Winter Market Prep. Before You Walk The Floor.
What Buyers Need To Do Before Coterie And Magic, Not During.
Every Spring market season I watch smart buyers walk the floor with no plan and walk out with a notebook full of ideas and nothing that actually changes in the business.
A plan that only lives in your head isn’t a plan. It’s a wish.
Know Your Goal Before You Go
The Buyers who leave with something real aren’t the ones who saw the most booths. They went in solving for something specific. A category they need to source. A price point they can’t move on. A vendor gap they’re trying to close. If you can’t name your goal in one sentence, you don’t have one yet.
Book The Meetings. Don’t Wait For Hallway Run Ins
This might be your only face time all year with a factory principal. The real value of a show happens before you arrive, not while you’re wandering the aisles. Confirm meetings in advance. Bring three questions for each one. Ask what’s changed since your last conversation, because assuming nothing did is how brands get blindsided at reorder time.
Know Your Numbers Cold
Vendors read your leverage before you say a word. Show floor excitement is expensive if it isn’t checked against real math. Know your walk away point. Know what you’d trade for faster lead times. And set yourself one rule going in: no verbal agreement leaves the booth without a 48-hour review. The floor is built to feel urgent. Your numbers don’t have to move because of that.
The Follow Up Is Worth More Than The Show Itself
The biggest waste in trade show season isn’t a bad meeting. It’s a great idea that never gets revisited. Review your notes on the flight home while they’re still fresh. Assign an owner to every lead. Put a follow up date on the calendar before you land, because whatever excited you in January will get buried the week you’re back at your desk.
The Buyers who get real value out of these shows aren’t the ones who collected the most cards. They’re the ones who walked in with a goal, a negotiating position, and a plan to act before it went cold.
