Three lifestyle businesses this week where the thesis that built them is now the thing that broke them:
Nike Q1 revenue fell 4% to $11.2B as the Dunk franchise dropped nearly 50%.
Shein’s first post-IPO earnings showed 1% revenue growth and shares down 27% since its September debut.
Waldencast’s H1 2026 results showed Milk Makeup revenue down 57% after selling Obagi Medical to stay solvent.
1. Nike Q1 FY2027: Revenue Down 4%, Dunk Franchise Down 50%, Pace Restructuring Launched
Nike reported Q1 fiscal 2027 results on October 1, with revenue down 4% to $11.2B. The Dunk franchise fell nearly 50%, a $200M headwind to the Sportswear segment. Greater China declined 26% on a currency-neutral basis. Nike launched Pace, a restructuring targeting $2.5B in cumulative savings through fiscal 2031, with $300M in severance charges. Full-year guidance calls for a high single-digit revenue decline.
Takeaway: A $200M headwind from one franchise is a product cycle ending without a replacement ready. Nike built its cultural equity on hero silhouettes. That concentration is now the liability.
2. Shein First Post-IPO Earnings: 1% Revenue Growth, Stock Down 27%
Shein debuted on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on September 1 at a $26.5B valuation, down from its $100B private peak in 2022. First post-IPO earnings released September 28 showed H1 net revenue of $20.1B, up 1%. Adjusted EBIT dropped 50.4%. European revenue fell 13.9% in Q2. Shares are down 27% since the IPO.
Takeaway: 1% revenue growth on $20B in sales is not a growth company. The hyper-volume model works when speed and price are the differentiators. When freight, tariffs, and regulatory pressure arrive, the lack of pricing power becomes the problem.
3. Waldencast H1 2026: Milk Makeup Down 57%, Obagi Sold, Nasdaq Exit
Waldencast was built in 2022 as a SPAC combining Obagi Medical (clinical skincare) and Milk Makeup (indie beauty). In July 2026, Waldencast sold Obagi to Bridgepoint for up to $460M to retire $178M in debt. H1 2026 results showed Milk Makeup revenue of $26.1M, down 57%. Elevated retailer inventory, no summer launch, and softer demand each contributed. Gross margin fell from 67.3% to 53.7%. The company is delisting from Nasdaq to OTC. One signal: Hydro Grip product line grew 69%.
Takeaway: The roll-up required both brands to grow together. Obagi was sold to fund Milk Makeup’s survival. A 57% decline with one franchise as the only growth evidence is not a turnaround. It is the end of the platform thesis.
Franchise concentration, hyper-volume without pricing power, and a multi-brand roll-up that collapsed.
Three bets on scale, three different ways to see it break.
Nike down $200M from one silhouette, Shein at 1% growth after a $26B IPO, Waldencast selling one brand to fund another that is down 57%.
