How GLP-1s Are Reshaping The Size Curve, And How To Plan For It.
Cutting plus sizes because of a headline isn’t a strategy. It’s a reaction.
A few years ago, the business case for extended sizing was simple. Underserved demand and a modest grading cost.
That case assumed the size curve would hold still. GLP-1s changed that, and a lot of lifestyle brands are now overcorrecting in the wrong direction.
The Size Curve Is Moving
About 1 in 10 US adults is now on a GLP-1 for weight loss, more than triple where it was two years ago. Plus-size specialists are seeing double-digit sales declines, and major chains are quietly cutting larger sizes. Billions in plus-size inventory now sit at markdown risk. The fixed size curve most buy plans are built on is gone.
Don’t Overcorrect
The market is smaller, not gone. Most US women still wear a size 14 or above. Roughly half of GLP-1 users stop within the first year, many regain the weight, and a lot of them go back on. Your customer may move down, back up, and down again. And as big chains exit extended sizes, the customers they leave behind are looking for a new brand.
A Customer In Transition
She isn’t leaving the category. She’s shopping more, just differently. While she’s losing weight, she buys cheaper and fewer pieces because she knows she’ll size out of them. At goal weight, she replaces the wardrobe at full price. Be the brand she trusts on the way down, and you’re the brand she buys from at the finish line.
Where Margin Actually Goes Now
The biggest P&L risk now is buying this season on last year’s size curve. Rebuild size curves from recent sell-through, buy extended sizes shallower and later, hold open-to-buy back for replenishment, and treat “too big” and “too small” return reasons as early demand signals.
Keep The Range, Change The Depth
Grading a proven style is a one-time cost. Inventory sitting in the wrong size is a recurring one. Keep extended sizes on your bestsellers, carry the outer sizes online only, and lean on fabrics and fits that cover more bodies per size. Dropping a size range is easy on paper. Winning that customer back is not.
Track Sell-Thru By Size Every Week
Blended numbers hide the shift. Track sell-through, returns, and markdowns by size band, and watch for size migration in your own customer file. That data is worth more than any industry forecast.
GLP-1s didn’t kill the case for inclusive sizing.
They changed how you execute it.
This is a planning problem, not a values debate, and the brands that plan around their own size data will pick up the share others walk away from.
