Stop Posting Product Content. Start Building Brand Equity.
The 3 Rules of Brand Value
Most apparel brands post about fabric weights, construction details, and price points. They think product features drive sales.
They’re wrong.
What really drives brand value isn’t what you say about your product. It’s how you make people feel about it. This shift in focus is the difference between a $20 t-shirt brand and a $140 t-shirt brand, even when they’re manufactured in the same factory.
THE 3 RULES OF BRAND VALUE:
RULE #1: NO SELLING
Red Bull never talks about caffeine content or can size. They sell the moment, not ingredients. Every piece of content reinforces extreme performance and adventure.
When there’s no “selling,” your brain stops treating the content like an ad. The product becomes secondary to the experience.
RULE #2: IDENTITY FIRST
Aimé Leon Dore sells the Queens, NYC lifestyle through its content. The brand reinforces identity through cafés, boutiques, and collaborations with the Mets. They never talk about the clothing, but the clothing is portrayed while living the lifestyle.
When it feels like culture, people assume it has value. The vibe becomes more important than the clothing.
RULE #3: LIMITED ACCESS
In a world of noise, Bottega Veneta famously deleted their Instagram in 2021, then sales increased. This “strategic silence” created massive buzz. By refusing to play the algorithm game, the brand made every glimpse feel rare and valuable.
Hard-to-access brands always feel more important. Scarcity creates value in the eyes of consumers.
THE SHIFT:
Most brands focus on posting content that emphasizes product. But what really matters is how the brand conveys the perception of its product. This shift drives both brand equity and pricing power.
3 QUESTIONS EVERY BRAND SHOULD ASK:
1. Are you explaining features or building culture?
2. Does your content feel like art or advertising?
3. Are you posting too much or creating scarcity?
